I have a 18 month old who gets very tired morning and evening but only sleeps an hour at midday. should I go back to 2 sleeps a day?
He sleeps from 7:30pm through to 6:30am up early so barely makes it to midday and then has a long afternoon before bedtime. How can I get him to have a longer nap or should I go back to 2 sleeps during the day?
Answer: Generally from around 14 months of age, toddlers are dropping from two sleeps to one. This happens after an early lunch at around 11.30-12 MD. Each child varies of course, according to their individual needs. If you're finding he's going through an age and stage of needing two sleeps, then incorporate the 2nd. But be mindful that he's awake and up by 3pm otherwise he's likely to not want to settle as easily at night. You could also offer him some quiet time in his cot/bed rather than expect him to actually go to sleep, this can be a compromise which works quite effectively. The other possibility is that he's going through a growth spurt and temporarily needs more sleep in order to conserve his energy and fuel his growth. In the next week or so he may well be back to only needing and looking for one day time sleep. Best Jane
