Bleeding since 20 weeks - can I request an induction or c-section?

Hi Alex,
This is my 3rd pregnancy and I have had bleeding since 20 weeks usually accompanied by cramping, never had any complications with my other two pregnancies at all. The scans and testing all come back fine, they suspect a small tear in the placenta but can't be sure. I have had steriods at 24 weeks and will be getting them again in the next few days. My question is, my labours are short and both my other children came early at 38 weeks, I live a good few hours from the hospital and they have already said they want me to labour at the hospital (which I was 100% anyway). I am really worried about bleeding during labour, as are they, so can I request to be induced early at 37 weeks?? That is if I make it that far! I have a hospital appointment next week and don't like making a fuss but really want to be informed of what I can ask for.

Answer: Hi, Jane here, you are completely within your rights to question and make enquiries around your labour and delivery however, the staff will only recommend a particular labour/delivery plan if it is the safest and best option for you and your baby. Induction is not without its risks and although you feel it may help to avoid bleeding it may also bring its own issues, there are no guarantees. I'd suggest you make a list of your questions and take them with you to the appointment. Be honest and upfront you are entirely within your rights to have your questions answered. But the best people to ask are those who know you and your own individual history. Best Jane
